What is ACT?

ACT or Acceptance Commitment Training is process which endeavours to cultivate, at its heart, Psychological Flexibility within individuals and groups.

Psychological Flexibility is a state of freedom and creativity in both thinking and behaviours rather than the opposite, psychological inflexibility, which is seen as rigid and inflexible thinking and behaviours. Behaving in a psychologically rigid way means that often we attempt to deal with difficult issues in a most unhelpful way:  usually by avoiding them!

ACT emphasises behaving in ways that are in line with our values and goals (towards what is important) whilst recognising (noticing) barriers to action both in mind and behaviours which may keep us distant from our values and goals (away from what is important).

Being psychologically inflexible can lead to individuals, groups and even companies becoming “stuck”; losing sight of what is important and, as consequence, making less workable choices.

ACT teaches a fundamental life skill regardless of ones circumstances and is equally valid in therapy as it is in the boardroom. People that have worked with ACT state that their resilience to life’s ups and downs is significantly improved.

In many respects ACT can be thought of as ‘Mindfulness with a Purpose’; we learn to identify our thoughts, note the patterns and ACT in the service of what is important.

Difficulties and challenges are a natural part of all areas of our lives, both as individuals and part of groups, however:

  • ACT promotes Psychological Flexibility, by teaching new skills that we can apply to deal with all aspects of life in new ways.

  • ACT enhances Resilience by teaching us to drop the battle with our thoughts and feelings.

  • ACT clarifies what/who we Value in life and therefore gives guidance and direction to our actions.

ACT takes a contextual approach to life and increases pro-social behaviour (benefiting others or society as a whole). As a consequence, ACT can be helpful in many settings:  one-to-one counselling, mental health and corporate training, team building, decision making, and coaching.

What is the ACT/Prosocial Matrix?

The ACT/ProSocial Matrix is a simple, immediately useful, and very effective way of problem solving and increasing Psychological Flexibility both for individuals and groups. Click below to go the ACT/ProSocial Website for more information.

Groups of people are outstanding at coming up with great and wise ideas and implementing them; however, groups of people can also be held back by the ‘mind’ that can get in the way of wise decisions. ProSocial Matrix Trainers work with organisations to get them psychologically flexible and feeling psychologically safe. In a flexible and safe context people are now primed up for making wise decisions.

Wise decisions need direction which is where Shared Purposes come in. A shared purpose helps to align a team’s problem solving efforts in workable direction.

A team also needs careful monitoring of the results of their efforts. Behaviours that don't work need to be modified or stopped. New behaviours may need to be created and monitored.

"Coming up with purpose-directed behaviours and then monitoring how they work" is the essence of the ProSocial Matrix.

Chapter Consultants Ltd offer services to train staff in the use of the ACT/ProSocial Matrix to:

  • Facilitate development of teams and their shared purpose.

  • Work with groups to align their shared purpose, promote psychological safety and develop more harmonious and directed relationships between staff.

  • Train staff in the use of the ACT and Prosocial Matrix along with the under pinning’s of the process and why it works.
